SUPPORTING WOMEN IN VISUAL JOURNALISM
HOW WE SUPPORT
Through our broad array of programs, Women Photojournalists of Washington (WPOW) is committed to fostering a welcoming and diverse community of female-identifying visual journalists in an industry that can be competitive and insular. Our quarterly meetings offer a small-group opportunity for new friendships and professional development in an intimate, nurturing environment. The annual WPOW Seminar + Portfolio Review provides insights and inspiration, facilitating industry connections while connecting talent with the platform it deserves. And our monthly social gatherings build camaraderie within the industry as a whole. Our hope is that this support better enables visual journalists to go out into the world to document history and tell stories.
Education is at the heart of WPOW, and is woven through all of our programming. Through our annual exhibition, we demonstrate the vital perspective that female visual journalists bring to the coverage of historical events and issues. This exhibition opens in Washington D.C. then tours to up to ten colleges and universities each year. Our Speaker Series, in turn, sends WPOW members to these institutions to speak to students about the career and craft of visual journalism, stimulating candid, first-hand conversations about real-world journalism and world issues and deconstructing the industry’s barriers to entry.
