OUR COMMITTEES

  • Meetings

Quarterly members-only meetings are how WPOW began and are at the heart of what we do. This committee finds inspirational speakers from across the world of visual journalism and brings them to our members each season. The committee also liaisons with our partner organizations to create further dynamic programming throughout the year.

  • Seminar + Portfolio Review

The annual WPOW Seminar + Portfolio Review is our largest event of the year. The full day event is an opportunity to learn from our esteemed speakers and to share your still, video, and multimedia work one-on-one with industry leaders in Washington, D.C.— a base for many of the world's top visual journalists, editors, and publications. This committee oversees the event planning.

  • Inclusion

Inclusion is a crucial mission of WPOW, ensuring the elevation of the work, visions and concerns of our Black, Latina, Asian, Indigenous, and queer members. The inclusion committee strives to lift and champion all perspectives and interests, curating a diversity of speakers and topics throughout our programming. We are firmly committed to opening doors, training up and welcoming in a new, more diverse generation of visual storytellers.

  • Exhibitions

Since 2008, WPOW has had a public, annual, juried exhibition in Washington, D.C. celebrating the tremendous work of our members. The images and video are a historical reflection of what is going on in the world and a great way for WPOW to honor our mission of educating the public about the work of female-identifying visual journalists. This committee organizes the call for entries, jury process, exhibition, and local speakers.

  • Traveling Exhibition

After our juried exhibition premiers locally, it is brought to colleges and universities throughout the U.S. to inspire students as part of the traveling exhibition. Its sister program, the WPOW Speaker Series sends WPOW members to these institutions to discuss the exhibition, offer their unique perspective on visual journalism and illuminate pathways into the industry. The committee plans the logistics of the traveling exhibition and manages speaker schedules and logistics.

  • Social

Visual journalism can be competitive and insular. The social committee is tasked with creating monthly events to foster friendship, networking, and community. These events are open to all regardless of gender or WPOW membership status.

  • Mentorship

Our mentorship committee is responsible for amazing partnerships. Their programming connects seasoned veterans to new members. Together they learn from each other through networking, encouragement, and brainstorming.
